the streets were clear. this morning there may be some slick spots out there you need to watch out for but will it get cold enough to freeze? let's find out. here's meteorologist lynette charles. >> yes, in some spots it cold enough to freeze out there. as we look at maryland's most powerful radar, well we are dry. a far cry from what we saw yesterday. and things will start to improve throughout the day. but in the meantime, you can leave that rain gear at home because we're talking about temperatures this morning and you can see in manchester coming in at 32 degrees. 31 in monkton. 30 timonium. also frederick 32 and even columbia at the airport. these areas yes, cold enough to see some freezing some slick roadways out there this morning. take it easy. good morning annapolis you're at 35 degrees. and easton coming in at 34. you're also going to want to bundle up this morning as you head out the door and this is what you can expect as you plan your day. waking up around 6:00 that temperature coming in at 33 degrees the clouds will decrease through time as well. we'll get nor sunshine in here.

after a woman was shot dead at his home in the capital city. charlie is live with more on the breaking news happening out of south africa this morning. >> reporter: details are still coming into the abc2 newsroom but you'll recall the name as a double amputee known as the blade runner who quickly gained notoriety for the accomplishments. he was taken into custody after a shooting early this morning after the moment in a gated -- at the home in a gated complex in the capital city. the a. p. is reporting when police arrived on the scene they found paramedics trying to revive the woman. that woman who according to some media outlets is pistorius' girlfriend died at the home. a number of news outlets are saying that pistorius may have mistaken the woman for a burglar and shot her. but police took the 26 gerald sprinter into custody -- 26- year-old sprinter into custody. he is -- he made history in the

london games last year when he became the first double amputee runner to compete in the track and field section and now one of the most famous athletes in south africa. police say that the shooting a football player at morgan state university and today keith robertson will appear before a judge. that suspect shedding back to court for an arraignment hearing. that man is facing a number of charges including first degree murder and assault. it happened on the campus at the end of last year and investigate to fors believe this incident was a targeted attack stemming from a prior dispute. the football player who was hurt survived that shooting. she was taken from this world way too soon. a 10-year-old girl who was killed by celebratory gunfire on new year's eve and now her mom wants to make sure that other families aren't faced with the same kind of tragedy if it can be prevents. her family was ringing in the new year in cecil county. people in the area fired guns into the area while fireworks

were going off. bowyers was grazed by the head and later died at a nearby hospital. police still don't know who's responsible but her mother has now started a petition calling for an end of celebratory gunfire. the petition which can be found on the website needs 100,000 signatures before it is sent to the president's administration for review. the law right now is being called eliah's law. many cities firing a gun into the air is classed if i as a -- classified as a misdemeanor. a developing story for you now on this thursday morning. involving a police trainee who was shot in the head this week. this morning there's some dispute at the former rosewood center. the only public comments came tuesday night in a briefing. at that time, a state police representative said police training was going -- was going on at the rosewood quote for years. that's the case a woman who lives next to the grounds of

rosewood says this is all news to her. >> that facility has been using for training purposes for years. >> i was surprised that it was used for that. that's the first time i heard anything about that. >> sources say roughly 50 trainees were involved in tuesday's exercise and a police instructor fired a live round striking a trainee in the head. now we're still waiting to find out how a live round could have ended up being used during a training exercise. this morning we're learning more about the victims involved in the off-campus murder/suicide at the university of maryland. the sole survivor of the shooting has been identified as 22-year-old neil oa. his stepfather says he was shot in the leg by his roommate dayvon green as he was running away. family members say he plans to return to college park as soon as he can. his other roommate stephen rane didn't survive the shooting is. he was a senior at maryland

majoring in english. his 12th grade english teacher says he was a gifted writer and recalling his humor and his passion. >> we spoke at our graduation awards ceremony. and gave him this award from the english department. just a really fine, fine young man. >> rane transferred to centennial high school for his junior year from indiana. his mother and stepfather both work at the university of maryland and police say dayvon green set a fire at the home where he lived with rane and oa. once everyone was outdoored he started shooting. green later killed himself and his family says he struggled with mental illness. news time right now 4:37 and taking a look at the other stories around the country right now. after five days stranded on the water, the carnival triumph will make its way back to land finally this afternoon. passengers are expecting that relaxing caribbean vacation

didn't get it this trip has left a bad experience for many people on board. ed payne has that story. >> reporter: the trouble on the carnival trip ump started sunday when a fire broke out in the engine room. that caused the ship's electrical power to go out. that penalty no engine power and no air-conditioning. right now aboard the ship, there are more than 3,000 passengers. 1,000 crew members, and a handful of working restrooms. kim's daughter and ex-husband are on board. >> and he told me that they had just eaten onion sandwiches and that they were asking to use the red plastic bags to use the restroom in. and they had some fruit. they did have some water but it was warm bottled water. >> reporter: carnival's president and ceo offered an apology. >> no one here from carnival is happy about the conditions on board the ship. and we obviously are very, very sorry about what's taking place. >> reporter: the company is

offering full refund and other concessions but some say that's not good enough. >> i promise you none of my family members that are on there will probably ever take another cruise. >> reporter: three tug boats are pulling the massive ship through the gulf of mexico. it's expected to dock in mobile alabama late this afternoon. ed payne, abc2 news. >> carnival says it will give passengers $500 and a full refund for the cruise and all ship board purchases during the voyage. they're also offering discounts on future cruises. detectives are still waiting for a positive id before saying whether or not a body found in the california cabin is that of former police officer christopher dorner. the man hunt is over police say. the body found in the cabin was where he holed up tuesday. according to police, after a series of events tuesday afternoon, police trailed the man believed to be dorner to a cabin at big bear lake, california. they reported hearing a single

gunshot from inside that cabin before the building burned to the ground. while sifting through the rubble investigators found charred human remains and his wallet and id. he is believed to have killed four people and all of them having ties to various police departments. it has been almost a year since george zimmerman allegedly shot and killed an unarmed florida teenager and today the judge presiding over the case is holding another status hearing. attorneys are expected to discuss whether zimmerman's stand your ground hearing will actually happen. that hearing would determine whether zimmerman is immune from prosecution under florida's stand your ground law. attorneys will also talk about the logistics of jury selection in the event the case does go the trial. zimmerman is charged with second degree murder for shooting trayvon martin, he has pled not guilty. time now for a check of the forecast. little bit of snow out there on the grass and sidewalks this morning but the roads for the most part are okay. >> it just looks pretty lynette i know a lot of people are wanting snow. >> i doubt it.

bloomington, illinois was number one. and ann arbor, new haven and l. a. rounded out the top five. baltimore huh? >> number two. >> number two on the list. i think that's a facebook question. we'll have to ask you what you think. if you're single let us know. time now for a check of the forecast. lynette what's beginning on out there today -- going on out there today? >> the temperatures are important. we had the storm that moved through last night. and we're wondering if we're going to be seeing some freezing and slick spots on the roads this morning. that's a big possibility because we have these temperatures at freezing in baltimore. also frederick. 25 degrees in york this morning. we're dealing with very cold temperatures and you do need to bundle up but more importantly take it easy and slow down as you step out and about. not only do we have the slick spots out there we have some patchy fog in spots as well. now this is a system that's moved out of here. we will get high pressure building in here as we go throughout the day. and you can see that at the surface. so this will slowly but surely make its way in here. and then we'll start to see some change in the forecast. the valentine's day forecast

american airlines and u.s. airways have agreed to a merger. together they will create the world's largest airline. the company plans to make that announcement a bit later today. the deal has been in the works now since last year. most experts don't expect that deal to trigger a surge in ticket prices. american airlines has been going under restructuring since going under bankruptcy protection since 2011. five things to know before you head out the door this morning. pope benedict xvi will meet with a group of parish priests in rome today. the retiring pope is expected to talk about the personal experiences as a young reformist back in the vatican council back in the 1960s. pope benedict will step down on february 28th. senate democrat leaders are expected to vote on chuck hagel's confirmation as secretary of defense. a chairperson believes hagel has enough votes to get past the senate fill buster and be confirmed as the top pentagon first of all. the na plans to hold a news conference today in tennessee to respond to the president's state of the union address. on tuesday, the president called on congress to vote on a
